At first glance, Modha Rathri appears to be a simple wedding comedy. But underneath its humour, the film explores arranged marriage, family pressure, love, grief, caste and the difficulty of communicating within relationships. Maruthanayagam and Muthuselvi enter marriage without really knowing each other, and the events of one night gradually force them to confront the emotional baggage they have both been carrying.

Rishikanth and Anishma Anilkumar are well suited to their roles. Rishikanth plays Maruthanayagam with an understated quality, while Anishma brings considerable emotional energy to Muthuselvi. Their characters’ gradual movement from awkward strangers toward genuine understanding provides the film with its emotional core. However, Modha Rathri isn’t flawless. The film can feel somewhat stretched, and some of the later revelations and interconnected subplots aren’t explained as clearly as they could be. Despite these shortcomings, the film’s combination of situational comedy, strong performances and social observation makes it more interesting than a conventional wedding entertainer. Verdict
Modha Rathri is an engaging wedding comedy with considerably more on its mind than its premise initially suggests. Raja Karuppasamy shows impressive control for a debut director, while Rishikanth and Anishma provide the film with an appealing emotional centre. It may lose some momentum toward the end, but its humour and humane approach keep it engaging.
